Our Freedom

As the Supreme Court gets ready to decide whether they will review the ban on guns in our Nations Capitol, it makes me think on how we adamantly approve of our Bill of Rights; but the 2nd Amendment is the one that causes the most controversy. In my opinion, it is ironic that the one that secures our Bill of Rights and the freedoms that we enjoy as a nation is the one that has been under fire for the last 20 years.
As wise as our Founding Fathers were in creating the 1st, 3rd-10th amendment, they were just as wise in creating the 2nd amendment. There are 3 primary reasons that I see for the 2nd Amendment. Even though I do not believe any of these things will happen in my lifetime, we always need to look toward the future, what about my great grandchildren. Here I will lay out what these three are and why:
  • Protection of our country against foreign aggressors. We as citizens have the obligation to be called up by our state/federal government to form a militia to protect our nation. I think it is reasonable to believe that we would be required to bring our own firearms to fight with until the state/federal militarise can manufacture enough weapons to standardize the forces. As our military continues to shrink and our forces are stretched throughout the world, we weaken our own ability to protect ourselves. It is then left up to the average citizen to protect our nation. When Admiral Yamamoto was questioned about an invasion of American by Japanese troops, he was against the idea because of logistics and the potential loss of Japanese soldiers; he said "...there is a gun behind every blade of grass...".

  • The right of our citizens to protect themselves. There is evil in the world, that is a fact. We have an inherent right to protect ourselves, our family, and own property against people who wish to harm us or take it away. I believe the solution is getting drugs off our streets. The majority of violent crime is commited by drug addicts trying to get money to buy drugs. Getting drugs off the streets begins at home; parents taking responsibility of their children. Getting involved in what your child is doing, where your child is, who your child is hanging out with, and enforcing values, self responsibility and education in them. I think parents need to remember they are solely responsible for their kids until they are 18 or graduated from high school.

  • The right of the people to protect ourselves from our own government. If people would look at history this is how are nation was formed. We rose up in arms against our government, who was over taxing us. When our government no longer represents the people nor listens to the people, we need to have a means of resistance or revolution. If you listen to the news at all, our government continues to develop taxes and policies that seem to contradict the will or beliefs of the people. At present we can vote these politicians out of office, but more and more, there is a feeling that our vote does not count. What do we do when our vote does not count. Part of our frustration with the British government in the 1700s was that we did not have a say in Parliament. How would our revolution had gone if the British (our government at the time) decided to take away all firearms from the hands of the colonist? I think today we would have been a commonwealth of Great Britain if that had happen.
